My first two hour show was last night and overall I think it went extremely well. It got a little confusing since I had two burned CDs going at once as well as a third player used to swap in Actual CDs. The two CDs were so I could manually control the breaks between songs and even do some fading if I wanted (which I didn’t do much of anyway since a lot of songs don’t fade too well) but it all worked out in the end.
I continued my covert mission to thwart the FCC’s tyranical rule by airing another dirty word. Actually it was more of a case of getting the music director’s notation mixed up (thinking stars for a track meant “really good!” instead of “don’t play! profanity! warning!”) After that happens you pray that nobody calls in to complain and naturally we did get a phone call but they were just asking about a track off the new Beth Orton album (whew).
Also it’s kind of annoying not to be able to play “commercial” music, not because I’m dying to bust out my favorite Britney tunes but the line is pretty blurry. I included a b-side from the new Strokes single and they may or may not be considered commercial. They are pretty well known I guess, I don’t know since I don’t listen to commercial radio or watch MTV or any of that. Not playing commercial music is what allows college radio stations to not broke paying licensing fees, or so I understand, but the arbitrariness (PNAW) seems a bit dumb.
Besides all that, I played some music. I can’t really remember the playlist since I was hopping back and forth between the two CDs as well as grabbing stuff from The Box randomly, most of which ended up being not bad. Also some guy IMed me to say I had good musical taste which was gratifying both in the sense of a) assurance that somebody I’ve never met thinks my musical taste isn’t crap and b) validation in that at least two people were listening, assuming it wasn’t the same person that called about Beth Orton earlier.
Now I just have to memorize everything there is to know about the radio station and then I’ll get to join the mailing list. This is what dreams are made of.
Congrats on a good show. Also, fuck the FCC.
