Bill Gates, circa 1994
July 22, 2006PLAYBOY: What else is Microsoft involved in? We’ve heard about software that can control washing machines, for instance.
GATES: [Laughs] The washing machine example is extreme, but people do sometimes kid us that we see an opportunity to sell our software in broad areas.
You can read the entire interview online. I haven’t finished it yet because it’s long but know that Bill Gates blows a raspberry at some point.
The major cable and phone companies have spent more than $40 million
just since January of this year to make the American people think that
net neutrality is what they call a lose-lose proposition. I’m here to
say that the absence of net neutrality will really be the lose-lose
proposition. The American people will see discrimination in Internet content. They
will see higher prices for consumers. And that is why, Mr. President,
hundreds of organizations that span the political spectrum, who disagree
with each other on virtually everything - virtually everything — have
come together to say, we are going to pull out all the stops to try to
protect the Internet from discrimination.

Mr. President, listen up. Maybe we can have own private Oregonet with net neutrality.
Mickey is messing with my head
July 21, 2006I keep getting referers from Disney.com but I can’t see any links from their page. If someone knows why, please let me know.
Dizzle dazzle
July 16, 2006Pretty good weekend except for my classes. Midnight deadlines are rough for last minuters like myself.
Did my first bit of real driving around Portland on Friday for dinner and Munchkin. Maps are my friend. I think I’d like to get an apartment in Portland after I graduate so I don’t have to mess with driving in and trying to find a parking space. A job in Portland would be nice too so I could avoid the horrendous commute out to the ‘burbs.
Also went whitewater rafting yesterday. I even fell in and got back in while pulling in another guy and nabbing his paddle. The river wasn’t dangerous but it still some excitement for the day. Also took a leap off a rock about 15 feet in the air into the water and got a nice rush of air before going under. Turns out the splash jackets work against you if you go underwater while wearing them.
Then today just a jaunt to the farmer’s market for a live performance for a paper I need to write tomorrow. Some Sunday morning blues and a smoothie, close to the neighborhood where a plane would crash hours later. Eerie.
The Amazing Screw-On Head
July 13, 2006
The Sci-fi Channel currently has the pilot of a new cartoon, The Amazing Screw-On Head, up on their website. I just watched and it was very well done. Funny dialogue, lots of action, and mostly good voices. I couldn’t stop seeing Niles Crane in Emperor Zombie, though he had many good lines, and Molly Shannon was kinda “eh”. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. Recommended if you like The Maxx or Venture Brothers. It’s based on a comic I haven’t read by Mike Mignola that I haven’t run much into before in my limited forays into comicry, but maybe I’ll have to change that.
Be sure to fill out the survey so this will make it on the air.
